Car Tuning

Feast your eyes on this 73-year-old, award-winning Mercury restomod

Austrian car enthusiast Knud Tiroch is more than just a tuner – he is also a spray painter and designer with a distinct vision. This jaw-dropping 1951 Mercury restomod is one of his latest works of art.

Everything about the so-called Mercurius GTC is custom, rom the chassis to the body and the engine. Tiroch used a special silver alloy known as sterling silver to paint the exterior, heating it up to melting point and applying by hand. The alloy includes 7.5% of other metals, mostly copper, resulting in a highly unique and eye-catching look.

An all-new and rather badass-looking radiator grille, flared fenders and new bumpers at both ends complement the look and create a compelling 3D effect. Despite looking like a retro hot rod, the car is very clean and lacks excess trim elements.

Just as impressive is the interior, which reportedly took thousands of hours to finish. The abundance of metallic surfaces, rivets and textured surfaces make it resemble a jet fighter cabin – which was the actual idea, according to Tiroch. A digital dashboard and power options on board still make the Mercurius GTC feel like a modern car.

Power is sourced from an LS V8 mill tuned to 550 PS (542 hp / 405 kW). The transmission is modified to allow the fastest shifts possible for racing applications.

At a recent car show in Finland, the restomod won three awards including Best Paint, Best Performance, and the grand prize Best of Show.
