Nissan blames “the death of the GT-R” on new certification standards

The Japanese automaker alleges that excessively harsh new regulations enforced worldwide and especially in Europe were what “killed” the GT-R sports car for us all.

While strict emission standards undoubtedly played a role in this, they weren’t the only factor. According to one of the company’s executives, new limitations on exhaust sound volume also contributed to this outcome. The sports car had been 17 years in production and could have stayed on the market for at least as long as that, if it weren’t for all the legal hurdles.

The way things are, the gas-powered Nissan GT-R is dead, and its electric successor isn’t coming until 2030 at the earliest.
