VW Tayron lands in Europe
Volkswagen has unveiled a new crossover SUV for Europe and the USA called “Tayron”. It’s smaller than the Touareg and bigger than the Tiguan. Preorders in Europe start today with the minimum price at €45,475.
Note that, while the car shares the name with the Volkswagen Tayron for China, it is not the same model. It looks very similar to the China-spec Tiguan L Pro and is also 4.8 meters (187 inches) long, but Volkswagen doesn’t explicitly say what model it is based upon. In Europe, the Tayron will be offered in five- and seven-seat flavors with up to 885 liters (31.25 cubic feet) of trunk space.
The interior looks stock Tiguan with only minor exceptions. The base trim features an infotainment system with a 32cm (12.5-inch) display, a three-zone HVAC and advanced ambient lighting all around. LED headlights with smart high beams and 17-inch wheels are also included as standard. You can pay extra for matrix LEDs, adaptive suspension, a chat bot, massage seats, and a Harman/Kardon audio system.
Volkswagen says the Tayron for the USA and Europe will ultimately be available with seven powertrains to choose from. Only four will be offered at launch: a mild hybrid rated at 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW), an AWD diesel hybrid with 193 PS (190 hp / 142 kW), and two plug-in hybrids with 204 and 272 PS at the crank (201 and 268 hp; 150 and 200 kW, respectively).
Both Tayron PHEVs will ship with a 19.7-kWh battery pack manufacturer-rated for more than 100 km (62 miles) of all-electric range. Fill the tank, and the range will come close to 850 km (528 miles).
A couple of petrol turbo versions and a cheaper diesel will be added later. The transmission is seven-speed DCT in all cases.
