Lamborghini says the Aventador successor is a 1,015-PS hybrid supercar

Lamborghini has officially shed light on the powertrain designed for the car set to phase out the Aventador. Provisionally called ‘LB744’, it incorporates a V12 and a trio of electric motors joining efforts for 1,015 PS (1,001 hp / 747 kW), making it the marque’s most powerful production vehicle on record.

Despite the hybridization, the 6.5-liter L545 continues the tradition of natural aspiration. It weighs 218 kilos (480 pounds), coming in at 17 kg (37.5 pounds) under that of the Aventador. It is also rotated 180 degrees in the engine bay compared to the layout of its predecessor.

The mill produces 825 PS (814 hp / 607 kW) at 9,250 RPM and hits 725 Nm (535 lb-ft) of torque, both record-high values for twelve-cylinder Lamborghini engines. The intake, injection and exhaust have all been optimized to enable such results.

A new eight-speed preselector transmission sits behind the cylinder block and is rather small at 560 x 750 x 580 mm (21.9 x 29.3 x 22.7 inches). It also relatively light at 193 kilos (425.5 pounds). One of the three electric motors resides directly above the gearbox and supplies additional torque to the rear wheels when needed. The remaining two motors drive one front wheel each. The gearbox lacks a reverse gear: going backwards succeeds in all-electric mode.

The AWD system on board also supports torque vectoring. Every motor weighs a negligible 18.5 kilos (40.8 pounds) and produces 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) along with 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

The battery is rather modest at 3.8 kilowatt-hours of nominal capacity. It is sized 1,550 x 240 x 301 mm (60.6 x 9.4 x 11.8 inches) and is installed inside the tunnel between the driver and the front passenger. Charging is possible from a wall socket and any power source rated up to 7 kW. Regenerative braking is implemented as well, and the main petrol engine can occasionally top up the battery, too. The important thing is that you still cannot drive the Aventador successor on electricity alone.
