Tesla Model Y gets softer suspension in China

The Chinese branch of Tesla has decided to equip all new Model Y SUVs rolling off the factory lines with new, less stiff suspension after gathering extensive feedback from the owners. Later on, the novelty may become available in other countries as well.

The report comes from Autoevolution linking to comments in the local social media. According to them, the principal layout stays the same: there is a dual-wishbone setup at the front end and a five-link system at the rear end. The springs and shocks have been tuned for comfort, though.

Specifically, the damping force has been reduced by 50 percent at lower accelerations, resulting in smoother driving over bad roads. The springs have also become somewhat softer and some low-frequency vibrations have been eliminated entirely.

Tesla emphasizes that, should the driver floor the pedal, the car will remain every bit as stable and steerable as before the modification. Furthermore, it will allegedly even provide more steering feedback than before.

The Model Y for China and some export markets is being made at the Gigafactory Shanghai right now, meaning it could eventually become available with this new suspension in Europe, too. In other news, Tesla is getting ready to roll out a major mid-generational refresh of the Model Y, expected to arrive next year.
